Rather than go to the supermarkets for your pumpkins, why not have a family day out and go and choose your own.
Just visit one of the pumpkin patches or a pick your own, then take it home and get carving.
Things to remember
- Pumpkins are heavy – take someone or something to carry your pumpkins in. Some places have wheelbarrows
- Dress for the weather, fields can be muddy
- Limit the kids on the size and number they choose
- Take cash to pay
- Watch out for prickly stems
Here’s where you can get pumpkins in Oxfordshire:
Millets Farm Centre
Frilford, Abingdon
Great for a day out with the family, that’s free to get in, free to see the animals and play in the playground. After picking pumpkins at the PYO (where you’ll pay between £1.50-£3.50 for a pumpkin), there’s the farm shop, restaurant, garden centre and more to check out. Pumpkin picking is happening over half term.
Old Farm Shop
Grove Farm, Harwell
They have a PYO, but check in advance if whether pumpkins are included for picking. They’re currently available in the shop rather than fields.
Wykham farm shop
Bodicote
Carts full of pumpkins, great for photo opportunities even if you don’t want to go to a pick your own farm.
For carving, there’s a plethora of websites with guides and templates on how to carve more unusual or complex jack o’lantern designs. You can pick up carving kits from pound shops or supermarkets – there’s no need to wreck your kitchen knives by using those.
Don’t forget that once you’ve carved it out, use the excess flesh to make soup, roast some seeds. After your pumpkin’s gone mouldy, don’t forget to put it in your food recycling bin.
Where do you get your pumpkins from? What’s been your favourite design to date?
